Five former Go Figure Math Challenge winners—Timothy Baldwin, Aliya Deri, Joya Deri, Angel Lam, and Evan O’Dorney (pictured in order from left to right) have been making headlines in the news recently for their outstanding academic achievements
About Timothy and Angel
Timothy and Angel, from Stockton, have been selected to be on Stagg High School’s four-member Mathematics, Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) team. They will compete in the MESA national engineering design competition championships on June 24-26 in Los Angeles, California. It will be the first time a California MESA team will compete on the national level. Read more about this feature story in The Record.
MESA is an academic enrichment program that prepares and encourages students to pursue careers in the math, science, and engineering fields. This year’s MESA national engineering design competition presents a “Multi-Purpose” Vehicle Challenge—to design a vehicle that will be powered by a mousetrap.
About Aliya and Evan
Aliya and Evan were both recent finalists in the 2005 Scripts National Spelling Bee. Aliya, from Harvest Middle School in Pleasanton, finished with an impressive tie for second place; while Evan who is home-schooled in San Ramon, placed with four other participants in a five-way tie for 17th place. About Joya
Aliya’s sister, Joya, was recently honored as an Outstanding Achievement winner at the 13th Annual Math & Science Awards banquet hosted by the Sandia Women’s Committee.
